UNCW Hosts Inaugural Summit for Black Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students in the UNC System

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

A summit for black faculty, staff and graduate students in the UNC system drew more than 90 participants to UNC Wilmington.

Navigating Challenging Waters: Achieving Success in the Academy was held April 24-25 in the Education Building. It was hosted by the UNC Wilmington Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA), in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, Watson College of Education, Cameron School of Business, the Office of the Chancellor, the Office of the Provost and UNC General Administration.

The inaugural summit provided participants insight on how to advance and achieve success in academia and examined diversity at the state’s public institutions of higher education. The event was conceived to highlight the work of BFSA and other campus professionals, graduate and professional students.

B. Lynne Reeder, director of the UNCW Counseling Center, BFSA co-chair and a member of the summit planning committee, said, “Our overall hope was to engage with others with similar professional interests to share information, resources and support for the success of black faculty, staff and graduate and professional students. We hope that the issues and concerns that emerge from these summits will spark vital conversations about reforms to campus climates, processes and procedures that negatively impact the professional aspirations and progress of black faculty, staff and graduate and professional students in the UNC System.”
