Frances Carr, an office manager and recruitment specialist, made up half of the Career Center's total staff when she started in 1982. The center now employs 10, and as it has grown, so has Carr's role. She currently manages day-to-day operations, supervises staff and student workers and manages the budget. She also oversees on-campus recruiting efforts and undergraduate student employment on campus as well as residency appeal hearings.
Carr has seen tremendous campus growth over the years. "When I started there were probably only about 4 or 5 buildings and maybe 4-5,000 students," she said.
In addition to structure and size, Carr has seen technology boom on campus. "I remember when I had only been here about three months, and our vice chancellor for student affairs met with our division and told us that we were going to have to get computers because there were none on campus. We were all scared to death!"
During her career at UNCW, Carr has been honored with the Staff Award of Excellence and the Professional Support Staff Award for Excellence for Student Affairs. Additionally, the Career Center won the Team Award for the Division of Student Affairs (2001-02).
Carr said she "will truly miss this university and all the people I've worked with over the years, especially the students - they make you stay young."
Following her retirement in April 2015, Carr plans to spend a lot of time at her house on Holden Beach with friends and family.
