Monday, August 18, 2014
UNCW Provost Denise Battles welcomed the Class of 2018 to the beginning of their academic career during the annual convocation ceremony on Aug. 16.
The incoming freshmen class “trekked to Trask,” following the unveiling of the Class of 2018 flag and the taking of the official class photo at the clock tower.
Chancellor Sederburg officially greeted the incoming class. Joking that like them, he is also orienting himself to campus. "Campus is here to help you be a successful Seahawk," he said.
Student Body President Tobi Pollard led the group in reciting the Student Academic Honor Pledge.
Watson College of Education faculty member Candace Thompson delivered the keynote address. She sang her greeting to the crowd, telling students to "get used to the sound of your own voice. Remember the feeling of being here in this room, in this brightness - on the cusp of absolutely everything. This is your time; your beginning. UNCW is your geography to map."
Following convocation, students, faculty and staff enjoyed a picnic of the lawn of Hoggard Hall.
Classes for the fall 2014 semester begin on Aug. 20. In addition to convocation, a series of welcome events are scheduled through next week including campus fireworks and the annual Involvement Carnival.
