Wednesday, August 06, 2014
The UNCW community is saddened by the loss of staff member and alumnus Kenneth “Kenny” Sumner, who passed away on August 1, after a three-year battle with colon cancer.
Kenny started working in Information Technology Systems in May 2006, shortly after graduating from UNCW with a Bachelor of Science in business administration and a Bachelor of Arts in film studies.
Jonathan Graves, Kenny's colleague and friend, offered this remembrance: “Kenny built strong relationships at UNCW and he often spoke of how grateful he was to be a part of the ITS family. He was kind, caring, and had more strength and courage than anyone I've ever known. He will be missed greatly.”
Zachery Mitcham, who was Kenny's manager for the last several months, describes him as "the platinum standard of loyalty and commitment." He added: "Kenny pulled himself into the office when he had only weeks to live.”
Kenny is survived by his wife, Ashley Eldridge, and his parents Priscilla and Donald Sumner.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, in Wilmington at Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
Kenny’s complete obituary is available here.
