"I am Home"

A poem by the students of D.C. Virgo Urban Preparatory Academy

The text for “I am Home” was taken from the poems of students and teachers at D.C.V., written during a Fall 2012 artist residency with poet Glenis Redmond, and used in performance with CONTRA-TIEMPO (UNCW Artists in Residence) on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.

Read more about the CONTRA-TIEMPO residency and see photos of the final performance.

I am the prince of flow. A wild but gentle spirit

The seed within a tree I grow

I am from growing communitites, where not all trees breathe

I am from digging big holes and finding fossils

from a place with baby blue skys, you can rise high, high, high!

I am from a place called home

I am the beautiful brown which is what you see

from old homes

from the first mamal to ever stand on two feet

from big brains and fast runners

I am the HEART of a lion

I am from never good enough

I am from a chocolate and vanilla swirl family and pride is how I move through this world

I am 4 foot 6 of pure courage, and NO ONE can take that away from me

I am a single parent household

a mama struggling to put food on the table

I am a family

I am purple, silver, and black

I am from barbed wire of bold black men that don’t do anything illegal or bow down to anyone

Where I’m from we stand up for each other

I am the young brother of the sweet potato

I’m from a place where there are no McDonalds or Burger Kings

the sweet smell of tamales is my home

Love and church on the weekends

from grandma’s recipies

Baked beans and chicken and rice

Hamburgers and hotdogs

Orange soda and fruties

I am from grandma’s potato salad

The heel of bread

what’s left on the mashed potato spoon, that’s me

The sizzling sound of the pan when my mom makes

fried chicken or corn, all homeade, not out of the box

now THAT’s where I’m from!

That’s REAL!

From pinapple upside down cake to all gone

The left over food that no one wants to eat

I’m from parents that work so hard to put food on the table

I am from laughing to crying

Double dutch to tag

I am from E.T, patty cake, and Mary Mack

Mrs. Mary Mack Mack Mack all Dressed in Black Black Black

I’m tired of hearing sirens

were people think its good to be bad

it’s not bad to be good

I just want to go back to the old days

I want to be here now

at the majestic magnolia tree

where the harder you work the bigger and better you will be

I stand 4 foot tall proud like a lion

I’m a leader

My mom is a leader

She works hard to feed my sister, brother and me

I’m from working in the morning to going to bed at night and my mom says "it's going to be alright"

I am from a family that cares and love is in the air

I am home

I am from a place where my mom says "stand up proud"

"you can do it!"

I have spun webs to recreate, yet will never be forgotten

I am from a place called home
