It's the Year of the Arts: A Year Long Celebration. The University of North Carolina Wilmington will launch this celebration with a special line-up of performances, exhibits, outreach initiatives and events throughout the year, in addition to celebrating exciting new partnerships with local, regional and state organizations.
Highlights of the year include three historic events in the cultural life of the university. First, a newly renovated Kenan Auditorium debuts on Thursday, Sept. 21 with a Classical Favorites program by the North Carolina Symphony. The celebration continues on Friday, Sept. 22 with Mood Indigo: A Tribute to Duke Ellington, a collaborative effort among UNCW, the Cape Fear Jazz Society and WHQR-91.3 FM, written and narrated by Department of Creative Writing Chair Philip Furia.
The second historic cultural event of the academic year takes place Jan. 25 - 27 when UNCW celebrates the grand opening of the new Cultural Arts Building, the university's new academic, exhibit and performance venue for Art, Music and Theatre. The 3-day inaugural celebration will feature special performances and exhibits in each of the new state-of-the-art venues, including the Art Gallery, Music Recital Hall, Black Box and Proscenium Theatre.
Finally, in July 2007, the university welcomes the first annual Carolina Ballet Summer Residency program. Designed and coordinated by the UNCW Office of Cultural Arts and the Raleigh-based Carolina Ballet, this program will bring 35 professional dancers and choreographers to UNCW's campus for a month-long intensive workshop with 60 students, selected by nationwide auditions, as well as 30-40 local students. The Year of the Arts will culminate on July 28, 2007 with a gala performance featuring the premiere of new works by the Carolina Ballet and nationally-acclaimed guests.
