Wilmington Police Department - UNCW Area Update

April 2008

The men and women of the Wilmington Police Department continue to serve your area and are attempting to provide you with a safe and enjoyable living environment. We continue to remain very steady with our work in southeast Wilmington and are trying to address the concerns that are relayed to this office.

Our monthly statistics are in for April 2008, and once again there are no significant trends in either direction for particular crimes. When we add all Part I offenses together we are showing an 18% decrease in crime. For the first time in months, the burglary rate is lower for the month compared to last years results. Our detective division has charges out on three suspects for approximately one dozen residential break-ins that occurred in a one mile radius around a motel on Market St, where one of the culprits was staying. Computers, TV’s and cameras were stolen and many have been recovered. These three also were involved in a few break-ins around the Merestone area.

We had a scattering of robberies and aggravated assaults throughout our area. There was a week when the city experienced several “home-invasion” robberies, with a few in my assigned area. Since the report was filed, our “victims” have been charged with Possession with Intent to Sell Heroin. This is an example of where a home invasion can be perceived by the public as very disturbing, but there is more to the case than what the public generally knows.

Chief Evangelous and I had the opportunity to speak at a luncheon in Landfall during Azalea Festival weekend. The program was well received and we got a lot of positive feedback from the guest. We discussed Geographic Based Policing, crime trends, crime prevention techniques and other subject matters. We appreciate the opportunity to come out, speak and get our message out to the public. We will gladly oblige any neighborhood or business area with a speaking engagement if you would like to have us.

Some of you may have read or seen on TV about a series of problems that we had been having with a bar on the 400 Bk of South College Rd. During the past few months, calls of fights, shootings, gunfire, etc had escalated to a point where it was a drain on our resources during the night shift. We investigated the ownership of the club and found probable cause for permit violations. North Carolina ALE and WPD executed a search warrant on the premises and pulled the permits along with seizing the alcohol. Charges were made by ALE against the owner. Hopefully this will eliminate any future calls to this address and prevent unwanted violence

I attended the UNCW Community Relations Task Force meeting yesterday and several of the residents who live around campus stated that the quality of life was a little better. I appreciate everyone in those affected areas working with police and other agencies. If we truly have improved the quality of life there, it is a great example of how all stakeholders working together can make positive changes.

Feel free to call anytime if you have any questions or concerns.
