Mission

The University of North Carolina Wilmington is a public institution of higher education, established for the general purposes of educational, research and community services. The UNCW University Police Department exists as a support unit of the University for the purpose of establishing and maintaining an atmosphere in which people can go safely about their varied activities in furtherance of the University's higher objective. College and University communities promote a climate that encourages freedom of expression and social experimentation. The Department strives to safeguard this climate. Law enforcement and interdiction activity is conducted in such a way as to provide a positive learning experience when possible. The Department is structured to respond rapidly to the community's needs. This flexibility allows the Department to better serve the community by providing some non-traditional services.

The following goals have been adopted:

  1. To provide superior quality police service to the community on a 24 hour basis.
  2. To develop and operate the best law enforcement service in the State of North Carolina.
  3. To enforce all laws of the State and all Rules and Regulations set forth by the University of North Carolina Wilmington, in a manner that will be of maximum benefit to all.
  4. To encourage substantial interaction with students, faculty and staff to coadunate the community.
  5. To offer whatever assistance we can lawfully render without regard to the parameters of traditional policing responsibilities.
