Tips of the Day
Weather Radios
Weather radios have been described as “smoke detectors for severe weather” and can save lives because of their notification capabilities. Interested in purchasing a weather radio for yourself or your department? These specialized radio receivers are available at local electronics retailers and via numerous internet auctions and stores. For more information about how to purchase a weather radio, please visit http://www.uncw.edu/ba/safety/WeatherRadios.htm or contact EH&S at ext. 23057. For information about the NWS weather radio program, visit http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/ilm/wxradio/ and http://www.weather.gov/nwr/.
Storm Spotter Training
If you are interested in weather, you can help the NWS by becoming a certified Storm Spotter. Even though the NWS utilizes the most sophisticated and technically advanced weather technology today, NWS forecasters still rely heavily on reports from Storm Spotters to obtain “real time” weather observations and supplement data provided by radar. A report from a Storm Spotter can greatly aid NWS forecasters in creating statements and warnings. Storm Spotter observations add additional credibility to warnings, enhance the public’s response to warnings, and improve warning accuracy. EH&S is offering a Storm Spotter class on April 8, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call ext. 23057 to register and become a certified Storm Spotter!
