Frequently Asked Questions

When will the Student Recreation Center expansion and renovation be complete and open to students, faculty and staff?
Projected completion is scheduled for fall 2012 with a January 2013 expected opening.

How big will the fitness center be?
The existing Harris Teeter Fitness Center is approximately 5,500 sq. ft.  The additional fitness space and 2nd floor cardio deck will bring fitness space to over 20,000 sq. ft.

What all is included in the new fitness space?
There will be dedicated areas for cardio, selectorized and plate loaded equipment.  There is a great deal of AV equipment being installed in each area of the fitness space with multiple TV’s and sound equipment throughout the space.  In addition, most cardio equipment will have dedicated connections on the screens for IPOD’s and personal viewing devices.

Will there be additional group exercise space?
There are two additional group exercise studios on the 2nd floor of the addition, one of which is dedicated for indoor cycling.

How exciting is it to have dedicated aquatic space for recreation use?
The addition of pool space was the #1 request from students during our 2007-2008 needs assessment and we don’t think they’ll be disappointed.  The addition of an indoor pool will allow for expanded hours for lap swim, open pool time, as well as intramurals and sport club activities.  The outdoor leisure pool will allow for seasonal use for lounging and relaxing on campus.  Oh, and it is true the UNCW logo is incorporated into the leisure pool design.

Will we be able to find more time for free play basketball and volleyball?
Afternoon and evening hours for free play should be great with the addition of 3 new courts.  Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs always take up space during the evenings, but space should be available for all users.

Are there more of those cool fans in the new facility?
Yes, there a total of 8 of the large fans placed throughout the fitness space.

What about the sustainable measures you’ve placed in the current facility such as the water bottle stations and Dyson hand dryers?  Are there more of those in new facility?
Yes, there are multiple water bottle filling stations throughout the facility and new locker room spaces include the Dyson hand dryers.  In addition, recycling stations will be placed throughout the new addition as well.

Will this be a LEED certified facility?
Yes, the facility will achieve LEED status.  UNCW is hopeful the facility will be either Silver or Gold Certified.

How big will new SRC be?
The total square footage is approximately 165,000 sq. ft.

Who pays for this facility and the expansion and renovation?
Student fees pay for this facility.  The State of North Carolina does not permit state dollars to go into building recreation areas or facilities.

What are some other features or highlights?
Students will find dedicated office suites for programming areas, adventure recreation, competitive sports and fitness.  Fitness equipment from vendors Precor, Woodway, Matrix, Cybex, Life Fitness and Hammer Strength highlight the fitness center.  Expanded offerings in group exercise will allow for more classes each week and 3 racquetball courts are on the 2nd floor.

It seems to be so hard to get a job at the SRC.  Are there opportunities for employment?
Campus Recreation staff will be recruiting and hiring additional staff during the fall 2012 semester.  Look out for information regarding information sessions!!
