1. What are the prerequisites for this course?

Chemistry 102 requires that you have passed CHM-101

2. Do I have to take the laboratory along with the lecture?

Yes. The lecture and laboratory are considered one course and you must be enrolled for both. Each section of the laboratory is tied to a particular lecture section. The people in your lab will also be in lecture with you. You must purchase the lab manual and a pair of safety glasses (both available in the bookstore) before attending lab.

 

3. Why are there three time slots for each section of CHM-102?

Each time slot corresponds to a different aspect of the course. One of the time slots is for the lecture, one is for the laboratory, and one is for testing. The time slot shown as "Thursday, 8:00-9:30 p.m." is the testing time slot. There are three tests given during the semester and all three are on Thursday nights from 8:00-9:30.

4.  What are all the things bundled with the textbook?

The textbook currently used in CHM-102 is "Chemistry: The Central Science" authored by Brown, LeMay, and Bursten (Prentice-Hall, 10th Edition). Almost all of the reading and homework assignments are from the textbook.

5. What happens if I miss a test?

If you must miss one or more of the regularly scheduled exams, your grade for the missed exam(s) is the T-score you earn on the relevant section(s) of the final exam. For example, if you are getting married and must miss Exam 3, then your grade for Exam 3 is the T-score you earn on section 3 of the final exam. Section 3 of the final exam covers the same material that was covered for Exam 3 during the semester. You must send me an e-mail message to let me know that you will be unable to take a test.

6. What happens if I miss a quiz?

Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. If you miss a quiz for any reason, then this is the quiz that will be dropped. If you miss more than one quiz, then you will receive a 0 for the second and subsequent missed quizzes.

7. What happens if I miss a lab?

You are expected to attend every laboratory session. There are no make-up labs.  You will receive a 0 for every lab you do not attend, regardless of the reason for the absence. No one is admitted to lab after the first 10 minutes or without a lab manual or safety glasses. If you miss more than four labs (including those for which you were more than 10 minutes late) you will receive a grade of "F" for the entire course. Your lowest lab grade is dropped at the end of the semester.

8. Are there tutors available to help me with CHM-102?

Yes, free tutoring for CHM-102 is available at the University Learning Center. There are also Help Sessions conducted each week by the SI (Supplemental Instruction) students assigned to CHM-102. Check with the University Learning Center for a schedules of these sessions.
