VITA and publications
My teaching and research efforts continue to have organic chemistry and NMR spectroscopy as major components. I teach organic chemistry (CHM 212), Advanced Techniques in Organic Chemistry (CHM 312) and NMR spectroscopy (CHM 512)
My research focuses primarily on structure elucidation of natural and synthetic products using 1D and 2D NMR experiments. I have worked with many undergraduate and graduate students over the past several years who have synthesized a wide variety of quinoline containing compounds which show unusual NMR properties, the results of which have been presented at recent National ACS meetings. An extension of my research focus on NMR is collaborative research with the MACRL group on characterizing dissolved organic carbon in rainwater by NMR. I am also still involved synthesis and isolation of bioactive lipids from marine plants and fish, and more recently from bacteria. Graduate student research includes synthesis of fluorescent sphingolipids for eventual incorporation into lipid bilayers, in collaboration with Dr. Paulo Almeida. Isolation and characterization of individual bacterial phospholipids will eventually allow us to investigate, in collaboration with Dr. Antje Almeida, how these lipids affect the character of a lipid bilayer.
