CHHS Gift Priorities

UNCW Campus

Health and Human Services touch every aspect of our life. Our nation's economy, security, environment and the quality of our daily lives depend on the strength of health and human services systems within our communities.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington has made a strategic investment to address health preparation and services in southeastern North Carolina by establishing the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS).  CHHS was created to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health related research, professional continuing education, health knowledge dissemination, and application.

Approved by the UNCW Board of Trustees and the UNC Board of Governors in 2008, CHHS became a reality on July 1, 2010.  CHHS is currently home to three professional schools:  School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work.  Our vision is to effectively address health issues by empowering underserved communities and vulnerable populations, eliminating health disparities, and improving acute and chronic health outcomes.  To achieve this vision, CHHS is committed to development of academically distinct programs of study that prepare students for the complexities of promoting wellness and treating illness, health-related interventions, dissemination of outstanding transdisciplinary applied research that advances both the science and practice of health and human services, and the establishment of effective partnerships, outreach, and service activities to help build healthier communities while developing and strengthening the health and human services workforce.

We need your help in meeting human needs and improving the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities through prevention, promotion, maintenance, and restoration of physical, mental, and social well-being by making a gift to College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).  Your gift will provide the financial resources to recruit outstanding faculty and students, to provide our researchers with the funding they need to advance our knowledge base and to sponsor community outreach and engagement programs and applied learning experiences for our students.

Every gift to the CHHS plays a vital role in improving the public's health and human services  by supporting:

  • Excellence in the Development of a Sustainable College.  Development of the new College structure for CHHS is only the beginning.  We need to continue to advance our posture, furthering the development of the college’s infrastructure and distinction.  Gifts will support operational costs of the college and faculty and student travel to professional meetings.
  • Excellence in Health and Human Services Research. Supports faculty research to solve health problems in underserved communities and populations. Gifts will be used to facilitate the development of faculty research programs, purchase of equipment essential to faculty research, and to provide research seed funding for innovative ideas and pilot work to develop proof of concept.  In addition, distinguished scholars/researchers and post-doctoral fellows can be recruited and supported to help advance the development of our research programs.
  • Excellence in Health and Human Services Education. Provides scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified, committed, and diverse students, many of whom cannot attend the CHHS without financial help. Gifts will also support curriculum development, innovations, and linkages with public health practice.

Gifts to the CHHS are critical to our development. Private financial support provides the margin of excellence that distinguishes good universities from great ones.  UNCW is a great university.   It is well documented that direct state support for higher education is significantly lower than what is needed to maintain and develop the CHHS into a sustainable college of distinction.  We must reply on the generous support of our alumni, friends, and the research grant support of our faculty to make up the difference.

Please consider making a gift to CHHS today.  Each gift to the CHHS is important. Regardless of the amount, your gift will make a difference in our quest to develop a sustainable college of distinction.  Thank you for investing in our vision!
