MSW Coordinator Named Special Assistant to the Provost

Dr. Peter Nguyen, professor of social work and MSW coordinator, was recently named Special Assistant to the Provost.

In his new role, Peter will provide oversight of UNCW’s distance education. Effective in October, he will serve as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Distance Education. 

Peter received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. He completed his master's degree and Ph.D. in social work at the University of Houston. He joined the CHHS School of Social Work in 2015 as a professor and MSW coordinator. Previously, Peter was an associate professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work.

Peter has worked in the non-profit sector throughout his career with a focus on helping abused children and their families. In addition, he is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, treating primarily Asian clients who have depression, self-mutilation tendencies, cultural dissonance, marital problems or parent-child relationship issues. Peter brings his real-life experiences into the classroom where he teaches classes on social work practice and social justice. His teaching areas include social work practice and social justice classes. His research areas include leadership in higher education, cultural, acculturation and assimilation dynamics, parenting styles and mental health of Asian Americans.
