Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What workshops count as elective workshops?
Any workshop can count as an elective (or "additional workshop of your choice") for a certificate, with the exception of the Leadership Concepts workshop since this is required for all certificates. For example, a workshop required for the Organizational Leadership Certificate (i.e. Conflict Management) can count as an elective workshop toward completing the Fraternity and Sorority Leadership Certificate. Most workshops and programs that focus on leadership can count as elective workshops. These include Leadership UNCW workshops, student conference sessions, UNCW Presents' Leadership Lecture Series, Career Center workshops and more! If you have questions about leadership workshops/trainings/programs that you have attended, contact us to see if they will count as electives.
Can a workshop required for one certificate count as an elective workshop for a different certificate?
Yes! Any workshop not required for a certificate can count as an elective. For example, if you have already earned the Personal Leadership Certificate and are now working on the Organizational Leadership Certificate, the Ethical Decision Making and Diversity and Leadership workshops count as your two elective workshops.
I participated in a leadership conference or other leadership workshop earlier this semester. Can previous sessions attended count towards a Leadership UNCW Certificate requirement?
Sessions attended at leadership conferences this year (i.e., Student Organization Leadership Conference, Greek Summitt, etc.) can be approved as meeting a required or elective workshop on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for approval.
Why is a written critical reflection required for each workshop?
In the past reflections were required for each workshop. Now, we ask that you only complete ONE critical reflection after you have completed all of your workshops and community service or observation hours (if required). Critical reflections provide you with a structured opportunity to process what you learned and think of ways to apply new skills and knowledge. You must complete the critical reflection in order to obtain your certificate. The critical reflection also provides verification of your participation, as well as an informal qualitative assessment of what students learn during these workshops and programs.
Critical Reflections should be a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 750 words in length, written in paragraph form, saved in a word document that you upload into the Leadership UNCW system, and please address the following:
- Describe your Leadership UNCW experience, including all workshops and the community service or professional shadowing (if applicable).
- What did you learn from participating in Leadership UNCW? What concepts have influenced you as a leader and what, if any, changes have you made to your leadership approach because of what you have learned?
- In the future, how will you continue to develop your leadership skills?
How do I submit written reflections?
All reflections should be a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 750 words in length, written in paragraph form, saved in a word document that you upload into the Leadership UNCW system.
How do I submit my completed community service and observation hours?
Submit your completed community service and/or observation/shadowing hours using the our new online Leadership UNCW system.
Five hours of community service are required to complete the certificate in Personal Leadership, and an additional 10 hours of community service are required to complete the certificate in Social Justice and Community Leadership. Please see the CLES main page and the Community Service tab to see a list of ways to volunteer! Five hours of observation/shadowing are required for the certificate in Business Administration Leadership, and twenty hours of observation/shadowing are required for the certificate in Health Professions Leadership. CLES does not have a listing of observation/shadowing opportunities - please speak to your academic advisor for ideas!
