nosb logoToday’s technological advances allow us to research and explore vast ocean regions which were relatively unknown. With these new discoveries comes the potential to improve not only the environmental and economic well-being of our country but also our quality of life. Now our challenge is to continue the exploration and develop strategies for managing the oceans' resources. The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) is one program that prepares the next generation of marine scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates, and informed citizens to accept this challenge.

Inaugurated in 1998, the NOSB provides an educational forum for students to excel in math and science and receive national recognition for their diligence and talents. One of the long-term goals of the program is to foster the next generation of marine scientists, educators and policy makers for the ocean sciences. NOSB has proven that it can generate student interest and excitement about science and the oceans, giving young people a chance to examine marine science, both as an in-depth area of study and as a possible career. The NOSB fosters collegiality and teamwork, competition, imaginative thinking and factual recollection. It also allows students to work side by side with experts in a wide variety of settings. Of equal importance, NOSB excites and inspires our nation's teachers, providing them with new tools to capture the imagination of their students.

North Carolina is one of 25 NOSB regions. The winner of the Blue Heron Bowl, hosted at UNCW on Feb. 6, 2010, will qualify for the NOSB National competition which will be hosted in St. Petersburg, FL on April 23-25, 2010. This all-expense paid trip will allow the winning team from North Carolina to compete with other regional winners and provide the team with the opportunity to learn more about ocean science research at the University of South Florida. To learn more about NOSB and the National Competition, please visit: www.nosb.org. Also be sure to check out their new "Living on the Ocean Planet" Video Contest.
