The Department of Communication Studies invites student actors and designers/technicians to audition and interview for the spring 2012 production of the musical "Working."
The production will take place from April 26-29 over five performances. Participating students may enroll in COM 295-003 Applied Performance & Media Production for course credit, but class enrollment is not required. Group rehearsals will begin after spring break.

| 7th | Graduation Speech Context (PDF) ALL seniors graduating in December are eligible to submit a speech that encompasses the experiences that helped him/her become a soaring Seahawk. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges as the graduation speaker for the Communication Studies departmental graduation ceremony. Once the winner is selected, he/she will work directly with a speech coach to refine the content of the speech and perfect the delivery prior to the ceremony. The speech should be between 5-7 minutes in length, and the rough draft of the speech must be submitted by December 7th at 4:00pm to Dr. Olsen via email. Internship Panel The Communication Studies Society (CSS) is hosting an internship panel on November 15th at 7:00pm in Leutze 143. Hear from local professionals about what they look for in an intern and get some advice from students who have interned as well. Thinking about applying for an internship? This is a great event where you can learn about the experiences your peers have had interning, what classes you should take, potential questions you could get asked at an interview for an internship, and why an internship is so important. | 21st | Rock for the Cure @ the Reel Cafe The Communication Studies Society will host the 5th annual Rock for the Cure breast cancer benefit concert THIS FRIDAY, October 21 from 7:00-10:00pm on the second floor of the Reel Cafe. There is a $5 donation at the door and all proceeds benefit the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation's Pink Ribbon Project. The Schoolboys, UNCW's unofficial faculty rock band, will provide live entertainment with a mix of modern and class rock music. There will be a silent auction filled will autographed memorabilia and tons of raffle prizes from local businesses and restaurants! We hope to see you there! |
| 19th | Breast Cancer Survivor's Staycation Essay Contest
In 500 words or less, tell us why a breast cancer survivor you know and love deserves a two-night stay with breakfast at the Hilton Garden Inn at Mayfaire. Essays must be submitted via e-mail no later than Wednesday, October 19th at 5:00pm to chinj@uncw.edu. The following information must be submitted with essay entry: Nominator's name, phone and e-mail address, and the name and phone number of the person you are nominating. Recipient of the staycation must be at least 18 years of age, and other restrictions may apply.

Rock Your Student Org at Rock for the Cure Contest
UNCW’s Communication Studies Society is hosting the 5th Annual Rock for the Cure breast cancer benefit concert October 21st from 7:00-10:00pm. We will be running a friendly contest among all the student organizations and athletic teams. The organization that can get the highest percentage of their members at Rock for the Cure will win a Level 3 sponsorship for next year’s event, which includes your organizations logo on our T-shirts and posters. To enter the contest, please submit your membership roster to Natalie Malek at nmm1610@uncw.edu no later than October 19th at 5:00pm. Come out to Rock for the Cure and enjoy a fun night with your fellow members! |

For more information on classes within the department, the Communication Studies Society will host a Make the Most of Your Major information session on Tuesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m., in Leutze 143. PCOM students are strongly urged to attend. PCOM students who attend the entire session will be issued an advising Fast Pass at the end of the session. It grants them the right to jump to the front of the line for PCOM advising during their advising week. |

Advertising Women of New York Scholarship Due If you were classified as a junior in Spring 2011, you are eligible to apply for the one of four $1,000 scholarships awarded to us by the Advertising Women of New York (AWNY). Male and female students who meet the criteria below are encouraged to apply by FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2nd 2011.
