Sleep and Peak Performance in the News

In a study of their men’s basketball team, Standford sleep researchers recently found that players who achieved ten hours of sleep per night for six weeks increased their shooting accuracy by 9%. They also achieved faster sprint times and greater endurance and concentration on the court.  

In contrast, chronic sleep loss builds over time and it’s possible to run a sleep deficit; being overdrawn in your sleep account. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation is associated with memory deficits, impaired performance and alertness, and delayed responses. The loss of REM, or rapid eye movement sleep (a period of deep sleep) can result in irritability, anxiety, depression, social and relationship problems, reduced concentration and decreased ability to handle complex and creative tasks.

Several studies have shown that students who routinely get more sleep (around nine hours per night) routinely make better grades than their same aged peers who get less sleep. They are more likely to think positive thoughts and to be better problem solvers. They also are more alert during the daytime and mentally prepared to learn new information.
