National Competitive Scholarships and Fellowships

(note: this is not an exhaustive list of awards, see CSURF for more information)

 

                                                                                                                                           

Listings are in order by application deadlines, with the closest deadlines at the beginning:

Rhodes Scholarship

Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford, including tuition, fees, and a maintenance allowance for a maximum of three years. Awarded to students with proven intellectual ability and academic achievement. An applicant must be 18 - 23 years old by the application deadline in October, 2008, and they must be able to receive a bachelor's degree before October 2008.

DEADLINE: October 6, 2008.

British Marshall Scholarships

Scholarships to study at any British university for two years, including tuition and fees, a living allowance, books, and travel to the UK. Any field of study, but preference given to students who combine high scholastic achievement and leadership qualities. An applicant must have completed a four year college or university degree before starting the scholarship program.

DEADLINE: October 4, 2008.

Fulbright U.S. Graduate Student Program  

Grants fund a full academic year of study or research abroad in all disciplines to students who demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the intended host country. This merit-based grant funds round-trip international travel, a monthly stipend for living expenses, and supplemental insurance. Applicants must complete a bachelor's degree or equivalent before the beginning date of the grant.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Scholars Internship Program

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is currently recruiting students for the new U.S. Department of Energy DOE Scholars Internship Program. Benefits to student interns will include Ten-week appointments at DOE offices, laboratories, or facilities; Weekly stipend payments of $550 for undergraduates or $600 for graduate students; Round-trip travel from home or institution to the appointment site, and; Opportunities to apply academic studies to DOE programs in science, engineering, safety, finance, project management, policy, planning, and other professional areas.

DEADLINE: Applications still being accepted for Fall 2008.

 

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Created to award study in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering, the scholarship will cover eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7500 annually. Applicants must be a matriculated sophomore or junior level student with a GPA of at least a B average. University nomination required.

DEADLINE: Online application by January 31, 2008.  Supporting documents by February 1, 2008.

Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship 

Active members of Phi Kappa Phi (or initiated by June 30, 2008) who will be entering a graduate program are eligible for either $5,000 or $2,000 competitive awards. Each chapter may nominate one student for the national competition. All national nominees receive a one-year active membership in Phi Kappa Phi.

DEADLINE: February 1, 2008.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of merit to students who will be college seniors and who wish to pursue graduate study in public service fields. Covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to $3000 a year for undergraduate education and $30,000 for graduate studies. An applicant must be a full-time junior level student at the time of application.

DEADLINE:  February 5, 2008. Campus deadline may be earlier.

 

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is accepting applications for a scholarship that will provide approximately 100 college undergraduates up to $29,000 to further their academic studies related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities; and to offer a related summer internship designed to provide “hands-on” multi-disciplinary training.

DEADLINE: February 9, 2008.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarships

Awards scholarships to students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, Caribbean and the Middle East). NSEP provides undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future of U.S. interests, in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government. The amount of the scholarship is based on financial need as well as the cost of the study abroad program selected (must be UNCW-approved). Maximum is $10,000 per academic term.

DEADLINE: February 13, 2008.

 

Phi Kappa Phi Undergraduate Study Abroad Grant Competition

50 grant awards for $1000 for 2008 are available. The competition is open to all undergraduates in all fields and is available for both members and non-members. Students must have at least two semesters remaining at their home institution after completing the study abroad experience and you must take the study abroad between May 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.

DEADLINE: February 18, 2008. 

National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships

The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study. Multiple disciplines are eligible for the fellowships - check the website for more detailed information.

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation

If you're a secondary school teacher (or planning to become one) of social studies or American history, you may be eligible to apply for a graduate fellowship program that emphasizes the study of the U.S. Constitution and offers up to $24,000. Fellows may attend any accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. for either a Master of Arts, a Master of Arts in Teaching, or a Master of Education, with an emphasis on American history, government, or political science.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2009.

Morris K. Udall Scholarships

Scholarships awarded to sophomores and juniors in the current academic year who have outstanding potential, and who study the environment and related fields. Each scholar receives up to $5,000, or the cost of tuition, fees, books, and board, which ever is less. Scholarship recipients are eligible for one year of support per application year on the undergraduate level. Nomination required. An applicant must be a matriculated sophomore or junior level student with a GPA of at least a B average

DEADLINE: January 26, 2009.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship program will award approximately 65 scholarships to college seniors or recent graduates who will attend graduate school for this first time next fall. The awards will cover a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees and books for the selected graduate degree program. The amount and duration of awards will vary by student, and the maximum award per student is $50,000 per year.

DEADLINE: The deadline for the 2008 Graduate Scholarship has passed.  Material for the 2009 competition will be posted in the fall of 2008.
