Distance Learning

What is Distance Education?

There are several terms used to describe instruction that is offered away from a campus, such as off-campus instruction, extension, distance education, e-learning, etc. Distance Education, which is used by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, is understood to include off-campus instruction for credit (whether face-to-face, electronically mediated, or a combination of methodologies). The UNC system has also referred to this form of instruction as both degree-credit extension and distance education. (Reference: UNC ADM MEMO 407, 12/15/00).
