University Studies

In January 2004 UNC Wilmington began a review of the general education "Basic Studies" requirements currently in place, relative to those at other universities. The mission was to create a curriculum that would provide our students with knowledge that will allow them to succeed, not just in their major coursework, but as citizens in the 21st century.
The new University Studies Curriculum consists of a Core Curriculum, which includes Foundations and Approaches and Perspectives, and Common Requirements. If you are a student starting at UNCW in Fall 2011 or after, you will be able to take full advantage of this new curriculum, called University Studies.
You can click here to read more about the components and learning outcomes of the new curriculum. You can find a list of approved courses from the UNCW 2011-2012 Undergraduate Catalog here.
Students who will graduate at UNCW under the provisions of a catalogue before Fall 2011 use the Basic Studies curriculum, but are welcome to take any courses listed in the University Studies curriculum.
University Studies and Distance Learning
University Studies is the core of an undergraduate education. It provides students with a comprehensive educational experience and prepares them for study within their major. At the present, it is not possible to complete all the required university studies and other lower level courses completely online though UNCW. Students entering into an UNCW undergraduate distance education program are encouraged to complete the required university studies and other prerequisites/lower level courses prior to enrolling. Undergraduate distance education programs are limited to online, upper level courses only.
If you are currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student at a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina and you are interested in registering for online courses offered at other UNC schools, you can by searching http://services.northcarolina.edu/. Both lower and upper level courses are available here.
