The Watson School of Education has received official information on legislation to allow SAT scores of 1100 to exempt students from taking Praxis I for admission to teacher education effective February, 2006.
Students with SAT scores of less than 1100, but with SAT scores of 550 or better on Verbal can be exempt from Praxis I Reading and Writing, SAT of 550 or better on Math can be exempt from Praxis I Math.
Please note:
1. The change is in effect now, so students applying for admission to WSE at the end of the spring term, 2006 or later can use SAT scores if they meet the above criteria and if the Watson School of Education/UNCW has official copies.
2. Students planning to use SAT scores instead of Praxis I must have official scores sent – copies cannot be accepted. Freshmen who applied to UNCW had to submit SAT scores, and can verify that UNCW has the scores by looking at the top of their degree audits. If the scores appear on the degree audit, UNCW has official copies.
Students who attended community colleges or transferred from other institutions did not have to submit them at the time of application to UNCW. Those students who wish to use SAT scores in lieu of Praxis I must have official scores sent directly from the SAT testing center to:

3. Students who do not have high enough SAT scores will be required to take Praxis I – not go back and take SAT again.
4. Students can use a combination of scores – in other words, SAT Verbal score was 550 or better so that can exempt them from Praxis I Reading and Writing, but since their SAT math was not high enough they will have to take the Praxis I Math test.
