School Highlight: Emsley A. Laney High School
by David Hand
Laney H. S. has been making partnerships and providing multiple services to students!
- Communities in Schools now have a BabyFast Coordinator on site 3 or more days a week. They provide case management and programming to pregnant and parenting teens and are working on a day care project to address the biggest barrier to their school participation.
- Besides CIS, Laney partners with Brigade Boys and Girls Club, DREAMS, WIRE and Kids Making It.
- WHAT Wellness Center: Provides mental health and an upcoming Primary care component.
- Reduced elective credit diploma pathway is used to assist students in graduation on time (4 years ).
- Dropout prevention class called Second Opportunities.
- Family Involvement Team process for targeted case management for students at risk of dropping out.
These programs have resulted in E. A. Laney High School having the highest graduation rate of any traditional high school in New Hanover County. We applaud their efforts with this impressive work!

The event was planned as a reward for several students who had worked hard to improve their grades. The outing also served as a mentoring experience, bringing ROTC students together with retired Marines, and giving the students access to positive role models in a fun and informal setting.
