M.Ed. in Middle Level Education Program

The M.Ed. in Middle Level Education specialization, provides advanced training for individuals holding, or qualified to hold, North Carolina Class "A" teacher licensure in at least one area of middle grades education (6‐9). The 33‐semester hour program is comprised of three components:

  1. Professional core: explore topics in research, curriculum, and diversity and their implications for middle level education.
  2. Focus area: deep investigation of issues related to middle level education and may elect to complete add-on certification(s) such as K-12 ESL, K-12 AIG, or K-6 Mathematics (18 hours).
  3. Capstone experiences: synthesis of issues in middle level education.

Based upon the view of the professional as a decision‐maker, the specialization addresses the need for conceptual and procedural knowledge for decision‐making and specific alternatives within the candidate's anticipated area of professional practice.

The program of study is available through distance education formats. Students may enroll in the program part-time or full-time. Most full-time students complete this program within two years.
