About the ELMS Project

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a growing area of need in North Carolina, particularly in our area of the state. As teachers and support staff welcome English Language Learners (ELLs) into their classrooms, training in ESL is essential to ensure ELLs’ success in mainstream classrooms.

The Educating Language Minority Students (ELMS) Project is dedicated to providing professional development opportunities for content area teachers who have ELLs in their classrooms as well as pre-service teachers preparing for their own classrooms. Funded by a grant through the Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition, the ELMS Project seeks to build academic support for ELLs in mainstream classrooms by increasing the number of content area teachers in North Carolina with ESL training.

The ELMS Project offers several professional development opportunities to meet the needs of in-service and pre-service teachers. Each program is offered online, allowing teachers the flexibility to attend class and complete assignments without travel. In-state tuition and fees for programs and courses offered through the ELMS Project are covered by the grant.
