
Carla Makela, recently joined UNCW as a part-time faculty, and supervises field experiences students. Both her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Elementary Education and Educational Systems Development are from Michigan State University. Her background is in elementary/middle grade public school teaching, and supervision of interns at Michigan State University. In 1988, Carla began working for Cincinnati Public Schools and served in a variety of capacities, including classroom master teacher (grades K-6), District Wide Literacy Specialist, and Professional Practice School Coordinator and mentor. Her focus in the past five years has been teacher training in the area of best practices in literacy. She has been presenter/facilitator at several national educational conferences, and taught SIRI (Summer Institute for Reading Instruction), and “Teaching Adolescent Literacy: A core Curriculum for Educators, Grades 4-12”, for the Ohio Department of Education.
