Admission Requirements for Instructional Technology Specialists Certificate

Who Should Apply

The ITS/TF Certificate program is designed to meet the needs of K-12 teachers, as well as instructional technology specialists, community college faculty/staff, and individuals interested in the design and development, implementation and management of educational and training materials. The certificate program serves individuals who do not wish to earn a Master of Science degree, but wish to expand their knowledge and skills in design, development, implementation and management of instructional materials for different delivery systems.

 Minimum Admission Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the Instructional Technology Specialist certificate program must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in this country or its equivalent in a foreign institution based on a four-year program and have a strong overall academic record with a “B” average or better in the basic courses required in the area of the proposed certificate program. Applicants are required to submit the following to the Graduate School.

    1. Official transcripts of all college work (undergraduate and graduate).
    2. A letter describing educational and professional experiences, reasons for pursuing the certificate, and the contributions that the student hopes to make after completing the program.
    3. International students: TOEFL or IELTS score of 550 or higher
    4. A completed, signed Graduate Certificate Application Package.

Applicants who plan to apply for Special Endorsement in Computers in Education must currently have (or be eligible for) a NC teaching license. Students may transfer up to 9 semester hours as a non-degree student at UNCW toward the graduate degree in Instructional Technology Program.Back to Top

Prerequisites

Students entering the certificate program must demonstrate basic technology skills. Students entering the program with very little or no computing experience will be required to take EDN 303, Instructional Technology, or pass the performance competencies test for EDN 303.Back to Top

When & How to Apply

Students are admitted to the program each semester. The deadline for receipt of applications by the Graduate School is November 15 if the student wishes to enroll in the spring of 2008. The deadline is April 15 for the summer and fall of 2008.

Applicants are required to submit the following materials to the UNCW Graduate School Admissions Office:

Official graduate application (Use https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=uncw-grad to apply electronically.)

Official transcripts of all college work (undergraduate and graduate). The transcripts should be mailed directly to UNCW Graduate School.

Three recommendations from individuals in professionally relevant fields, addressing the applicant's demonstrated academic skills and/or potential for successful graduate study.

Evidence of a bachelor's degree at the time of entrance.

International students: TOEFL score of 550 or higher or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 217 or better (computerized test), 550 or better (paper test), or a minimum score of 79 on the Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) or IELTS minimum score of 6.5 or 7.0 to be eligible for a teaching assistantship.

Letter of application and a statement of professional goals describing applicant’s educational & professional experiences, reasons for pursuing a master’s degree in instructional technology, & contributions that applicant hopes to make after degree completion.

Assistanship

Graduate Assistantships are available and are awarded on a competitive basis each academic year. Graduate assistants are chosen from among the candidates who apply by the March 1 deadline for the Fall semester.

Students interested in being considered for an assistantship should check the appropriate box on the application form and should submit a description of their technology skills in addition to the other application materials.

Tuition and Financial Aid

  • Full-time students can expect to complete the program in two years (four semesters) plus a possible summer session for a Focus Area course.

  • Part-time students can expect to complete the program in as few as three years (six semesters) plus summer sessions for Focus Area courses.

In-state residency  for NC full time teachers

The North Carolina law on residency states that in-state residency for tuition purposes may be granted to someone who has signed a full-time teaching contract with public schools in North Carolina provided the other residentiary acts are also in oder.  There are three pieces of documentation on the Graduate School web site that needs to be filled out and returned to the Graduate School.  The following is the link to that page http://www.uncw.edu/grad_info/grad_forms2.htm and below is what is needed to be completed: 

Students should follow the instructions on each of those forms. 

1) Teacher Tuition Benefit form

2) Principal's Declaration for Teachers form

3) Long Residency Form

The North Carolina Model Teaching Education Consortium (NCMTEC) also offers supports for teachers especially minority teachers in North Carolina’s public schools. UNCW is one of the partner universities with NCMTEC.

Financing your graduate degree:

In addition to applying for WSE graduate assistanship and/or scholarship (more information about schoraship is available through UNCW Graduate School), there are many options available for students interested in financing their graduate education.  Listed below are sources that offer loans and special scholarship funds.
