The second cohort in the NC Quest grant at UNCW finished the program
with their “Celebration Day” on December 6, 2004 at UNCW.
The celebration event was held at the UNCW Center for Marine Science
with the focus being on the participants’ presentations of their
portfolio projects. The presentations gave the students an opportunity
to share what they learned and enjoyed throughout their enrollment in
NC Quest.
The group embarked on a tour of the Center for Marine Science before
sitting down to dinner. During dinner, the entertainment consisted of
a variety of door prizes that were presented to participants and guests.
Dr. Cathy Barlow, Dean of the Watson School of Education, began the formal
program by delivering the welcome speech and congratulating the teachers
on becoming learners once again.
Afterwards, the participants took to the stage to present their final
course portfolios to an audience of peers, instructors and guests. The
students utilized a variety of media materials in their presentations
to include web pages, video clips, computer software, music and print
resources. The students’ online media allowed them to share their
lesson plans, tutorials and exercises with other teachers all around
the country. During David Childer’s presentation, he used Harry
Chapin’s song “Flowers are Red,” to emphasize that
education is not about teaching people to think the same, but about teaching
people to think creatively and uniquely.
All involved felt that Cohort II’s “Celebration Day” was
a great success and that it validated the hard work the students and
staff endured over the academic year.
NC Quest Cohort II consisted of fourteen participants including five
mentors, three Science and six Math teachers. The participants were from
four different counties including Sampson, Brunswick, New Hanover and
Pender.
The mentors were Karen Burton, Jill Hastings, Angela Jeffrey, Leanne
Radabaugh, and Kathy Smith. From her experience with the program, Jill
Hastings said that “NC Quest has been very valuable to my professional
growth. It has really taken me in directions that I had no idea existed
before I started.”
The Science participants were Krista Long, Michelle Hafey and Maureen
Rohde. Krista Long expresses her satisfaction with the program because
she “saw a deeper level of understanding and interest from the
students.”
The Math participants were Jennifer Piatak, Cindy Cavenaugh, Tim Chase,
David Childers, Cherly Talbot and Don Ward. “What I have done so
far is only the beginning. Through the reflective process, I will continue
to improve the way the students participate in the classroom,” said
Don Ward.
The instructional staff members give their best wishes to our December
2004 NC Quest graduates!
