|
The NC Quest math group came together on March 25, 2004 for an introductory
workshop on graphing calculators at Leland Middle School. Math instructor
Marty Sugerik led participants through a series of labs that can be pre-programmed
for efficient use during classroom periods. Among the tools presented,
was the TI-83 from Texas Instruments. Using this graphing calculator and its associated data collection tools,
students were able to preview labs built around the following mathematics
concepts:
- Graphical analysis
- Plots
- Data Analysis
- Advanced Statistics and Regression Analysis
- Graph-table split screen
- Matrices
- Equation Solver
- Data lists
- Tables
- Functions
- Programming
- Data Collection
Features
of the TI-83
Features
of the CBL 2 and CBR data collection tools
During the presentation, Mr. Sugerik demonstrated methods for customizing
the available pre-prepared labs for the middle grades classroom. He also
highlighted opportunities to integrate applicable science concepts into
the math labs. Participants were given copies of the labs and were informed
about opportunities to check out equipment for use in their classrooms.
