Course Description:
Summer I: Effective Teaching Strategies
Effective Teaching Strategies is the second Alternative Pathways
to Teaching course. In this course we begin exploring various aspects
of the psychological foundations of education and their contribution
to sound teaching decisions and reflective practice. This course
addresses theories and systems of learning (behavioral, cognitive,
constructivist, and humanistic); major developmental processes and
typical characteristics; and principles of motivation. Group and
individual learning differences will be examined, including cultural
aspects of learning and learners with special needs. Integrating
technology into the content areas to enhance teaching will be a
focus, as well as the use of technology to communicate information
on student learning.
The format of this class will include both in class and on-line
instruction. Instructional delivery will consist of class discussions
(large and small group), cooperative learning, on-line chats, some
lecture, and hands-on computer use.

Course Description:
Summer II: Teaching in the Content Area
Teaching in the Content Area is the third Alternative Pathways
to Teaching course. The content of this course focuses on the basics
of effective teaching for all students, classroom management, and
instructional planning. It will include such topic areas as classroom
behavior management, routines and procedures, diversity, instructional
planning, research based best practices, higher order thinking skills,
assessment, and reading and writing in the content area.
The format of this class will include class discussions (large
and small group), cooperative learning tasks, use of Task Stream
for developing lesson plans and rubrics, student presentations,
role play, and some lecture.
