Understanding the Learner Overview
Course Description:
A study of the major psychological variables that influence learning
in schools, and their applications to teaching. Theories and systems
of learning and major developmental processes will be addressed.
Group and individual differences will be examined, including cultural
aspects of learning and learners with special needs. Practices associated
with effective teaching, including classroom management and valid
assessment of student learning, are also major topics of this course.
Particular emphasis will be placed on principles of learning and
those conditions within classrooms that influence learning. Key
topics include cognitive and behavioral models of learning, motivation,
teaching and management strategies and skills, individual difference
variables and classroom assessment. Lectures, class discussions
(large and small groups), cooperative learning tasks, and analysis
of videos and case studies will be used to stimulate thought and
discussion.
