Congratulations to Mr. Jeff Ertzberger from the University of North Carolina - Wilmington! He is our first winner of the Great Ideas contest. Mr. Ertzberger has designed classroom games and review templates using Microsoft Office programs, and makes these freely available to other educators from the university Web site. You will find bingo cards that shuffle with a click of the mouse, self-checking spreadsheets, printable "board" games, and seven different PowerPoint review games.
All of the templates are easy to edit, which supports differentiated learning. Teachers can make the games more or less difficult, add or remove questions, or add more time to the games to suit the needs of different students. Instructions are included with each template for making these changes.
Some examples are:
Bingo Card Generator - after creating a set of standard cards for the class, a teacher can easily modify a few select cards to have fewer words per card.
Scrambled Words template - a teacher could create a scrambled words page and save it for use with one set of students, then remove some of the words from the file and re-save it for use with ESL students or those who have difficulty with the subject.
PowerPoint individual games - timer settings can be removed to give students unlimited time to answer questions, or reduced to increase the challenge of each game.
Next month we'll introduce our second winner and share his great idea with you!
