Cape Fear River Watch has been working to protect and improve the water quality of the Cape Fear River Basin since 1993. In addition to supporting the work of the Cape Fear Riverkeeper as a member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, CFRW offers a variety of Environmental Education, Action and Advocacy programs for all residents of the Cape Fear River watershed. River Watch has developed a wide-ranging environmental education curriculum at its Greenfield Lake facility. Three or more 60-90 minute lessons, taught by a professional naturalist, can be strung together for an exciting introduction to the wetlands environment that children (and teachers) will long remember. North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) is a nonprofit organization with the mission to attract and retain the pool of K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers in North Carolina. Every year NCSO hosts its regional tournaments on the University of North Carolina Wilmington's campus. These tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology. 6-12 STEM Competition

  • The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives sponsored by Utah State University is n interactive site that provides resources for students and teachers Pre-K to 12th grade!
  • Khan Academy prides itself on being a free classroom for the world! The site contains over 1800 videos divided by topic. Videos can be found for several subject areas, but are most plentiful for a wide range of math courses.

Watson School of Education, Web-based Resources - Science WSE First Years of Teaching Support Program
  • ScienceCoureware.org is a virtual courseware project that “produces interactive, online simulations for the life science laboratory or for earth science field studies.” It includes activities for earth and environmental science, geology and biology. Check out Earthquake!
  • Field Trip Earth is a project of the North Carolina Zoological Society. It serves as a global resource for students and educators highlighting several conservation projects, such as the plight of Atlantic sea turtles and Midwest Falcons. The site contains educator resources, full length articles, discussion boards, and much more!
  • Ology is a site sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History. Students have access to pictures, book lists, online quizzes, games, and much more!
  • The Virtual Body website provides a virtual map of the human brain, skeleton, human heart, and digestive tract! The site is narrated in both English and Spanish, contains detailed diagrams and interactive games!
  • The Interactive Periodic Table of Elements allows you to view data, properties, orbitals and isotopes. When choosing an element, students can read about it, view videos and photos, as well as listen to podcasts.
  • X-Stream Science is a website dedicated to science, technology, education and math sponsored by a partnership between the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation and WUWF Public Media. The site contains a series of instructional videos and lessons.
