The Department of Environmental Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, and Master of Science degrees.
The Bachelor of Arts degree emphasizes a combination of social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. The B.A. in environmental studies prepares students for entry-level positions and graduate opportunities in many diverse fields, including urban and regional planning, environmental impact analysis, natural resource management, environmental education, conservation administration, energy policy, public interest lobbying, and environmental law.
The Bachelor of Science degree allows students to specialize in either the environmental aspects of physical or biological science. Each of these areas of specialization emphasizes broad and comprehensive training in the fundamentals of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science directly related to environmental questions. This training is for those students who wish to acquire an in-depth understanding of the impact of science and technology on society, and who wish to contribute to the solution of environmental problems.
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Environmental Studies is a broad-based, multidisciplinary program for professionals, practitioners, citizens and students who wish to strengthen their knowledge of the environment. The program is designd to provide critical and practical skills to analyze, assess and propose solutions to environmental issues. Students may participate in the environmental studies certificate program while also enrolled in a master's degree program in a specific discipline. The objective ot the certificate program is to provide students with policy and planning information that may help them gain employment or advance their current careers.
The Master of Science in Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary, graduate degree designed for professionals, practitioners, citizens and students who wish to strengthen their knowledge of the environment. The multidisciplinary nature of this program provides the student with a unique balance of the scientific background necessary for sound environmental decision-making within the context of educational, political, sociological, economic and legal frameworks. The approach is intended to produce future and current environmental professionals with the broad perspective necessary to be effective leaders in the field.
