Applied Analytical Industries (AAI)
- Develops and tests pharmaceuticals in state of the art facility that requires constant environmental monitoring. Students work with the Environmental Health and Safety Director doing sampling, analysis, training, and reporting. Chemistry background helpful.

Applied Technology & Management - Internship with a corporation involved in environmental consulting and management. Activities involved include data collection & sampling, project analysis & management, water resources & coastal engineering, client contact, and interaction with regulating agencies.

 

Airlie Gardens - County park on Bradley Creek. Environmental Education and Horticulture are offered.

Belize Audubon Society - A semester away in beautiful Belize working with the organization which manages the nation's national parks.

Belize Foundation for Research and Environmental Education - BFREE is a non-profit organization registered in the United States in 1995. Founded by Jacob and Kelly Marlin.

Cape Fear Regional Council of Governments - Lead regional agency designated by NCGS 160A to promote cooperative arrangements and coordinated action among it's member governments to address regionally significant matters. Students will interact daily with key government officials to resolve local government problems, prepare studies, and draft ordinances for cities, towns, and counties.

Cape Fear River Watch - Part of the River Keepers of America organization. A non-profit group that monitors and tests the river and sand creeks and provides community education programs about fresh water systems from its facility on the Cape Fear River. Students learn sampling, analysis, training, reporting, and environmental education.

Cape Fear Swamp Study - Long term study of the impact of Corps of Engineers River Project on swamps and marshes of the Cape Fear River. Students will learn about shallow monitoring electronic systems, including downloading and data analysis. Will also incorporate boating skills and field sampling skills, along with analytical chemistry.

Carolina Beach State Park - Internship involving resource management activities including data collection education of park visitors, management of endangered species, and boundary encroachment prevention. Participation in daily park maintenance, interpretive activities, visitor relations, and park management.

City of Wilmington Planning and Community Development - City agency responsible for planning building inspection and zoning. Students learn about the planning process and enforcement programs. Environmental Law (BLA 362) and Land Use Planning (GGY 270) strongly recommended.

City of Wilmington, Stormwater Services - City agency responsible for educational programs on stormwater issues and more. Good presentation skills and a willingness to meet the public are needed.

Community Boys & Girls Clubs - Community facility on Wilmington's west side which offers environmental education to students and parents. Opportunity to work with environmental justice issues.

Congressman Mike McIntyre - Field office staff member for local Congressman. Opportunity to learn constituent casework and to work on environmental issues being considered by the NC Legislators and the General Assembly. Environmental Law strongly recommended.

Conservation Council of North Carolina - Chapel Hill based, non-profit umbrella organization for environmental groups throughout the state. Opportunity for semester away (12 credit hours) working in the Triangle with legislative and administrative issues. Students will work with nearly every environmental organization.

CP&L, in Harris - Internship working at Harris visitors center where all nuclear plant environmentalists work. Will work on public relations & education.

CP&L, in Southport - Internship at coal fired generating plant emphasizing water sampling and testing but including other aspects of environmental health. Opportunity to work with major utility (read mafia) to learn systems and procedures. Field sampling background desirable.

CP&L, in Sutton - Internship with Environmental Health and Safety Director for Nuclear Power Plant. Power Plant opportunity also to work with the units environmental testing laboratory. Students work with the Environmental health and Safety Director doing sampling, analysis, training, and reporting. Field sampling and chemistry background desirable. Drug screen and security check required.


DEL Laboratories - Environmental Health and Safety positions.

District Court - Internship working with the court administrator on all aspects of the justice systems (civil and criminal). Rotation includes interviewing prisoners, and assisting judges and court personnel. Environmental Law required.

District Attorney - Opportunity to work with local prosecutor to learn all of the criminal justice system, including some environmental crimes. Environmental Law required.

Downtown Area Revitalization Effort (DARE) - Non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of Wilmington's downtown and waterfront. Opportunity to work on environmental issues currently affecting downtown.

Environmental Consulting Firms - Various opportunities to work with large and small firms that perform land use evaluation, testing (soil, water, etc.) and reporting.

Environmental & Safety Systems, Inc. - A private company specializing in training environmental health and safety professionals.

General Electric - Environmental health and safety internship which involves both the aircraft engine and nuclear fuel aspects of the Castle Hayne facility. Students work with the Environmental Health and Safety Director doing sampling, analysis, training, and reporting in a high-level industrial setting.

Hammock's Beach State Park - Internship working with island park learning State Park operation. Students work with rangers on all manner of field assignments and environmental education programs. Lodging available for more extensive internships.

Keep America Beautiful - County agency dedicated to environmental education, recycling, etc.

National Audubon Society, in Belize - Semester away internship with conservation organization that manages all national parks in Belize. Opportunity to learn a wide variety of ecosystems, parks management, and international environmental policy.

National Audubon Society, in Wilmington - Work with director of statewide conservation organization performing field work, data collection, and report writing.

Nature Conservancy(s) - Work with various land trust organizations in the preservation of rural and urban open space. Environmental Law required.

New Hanover County Attorney - Internship with the lawyers for county government. Opportunity to learn operation of a Law Office and a county as well as to work hands on with current court cases. Environmental Law strongly recommended.

New Hanover County Environmental Management - Internship at the county's incinerator, landfill, and county wetlands project. Students work with the Environmental Health and Safety Director doing sampling, analysis, training, reporting. Field sampling background desirable. Students must be available for on site field sampling at 7:15am on days they work.

New Hanover County Planning - County comprehensive planning agency which is currently updating the Local Coastal Plan. Opportunity to work with professional planners and to observe the land use process up close. Environmental Law and Land Use Planning strongly recommended.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center - Opportunity to work in major medical facility in two areas. 1 - Environmental Health and Safety, 2 - Risk management (analyzing and working with all types of risk in the hospital, including environmental issues).

North Carolina Attorney General - Internship locally with the land unit of State's attorney on submerged lands issues. Also, opportunity in Raleigh for semester away (12 credit hours) working with environmental unit. Environmental Law required.


North Carolina Coastal Federation - Non-profit group which serves as a watchdog for coastal issues along the entire North Carolina coast. Opportunities in two areas. 1 - Wilmington office: data analysis and report writing; working with senior scientists. 2 - Swansboro office: working with headquarter staff on environmental education projects.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service - State extension service with several programs:

Arboretum: Plant Design/Education - Assist in all aspects. Management of Profits - Assist in managing volunteers (250), reception, gift shop, website.

Community Development
: I-40 Farmers Market - Research and assist development of regional farmers market. Coastal Plains - Assist staff scientists in developing and implementing re-vegetation plans, e.g., in cooperation with Division of Coastal Management, NC Coastal Federation. Nonpoint Sources - Assist staff with Golf Course/nutrient conference in March 1998.

Horticulture
: Urban Environment - Coop with Mallin & Merritt on 3 yr. EPA grant. Survey of Pine Valley homeowners; neighborhood coffees to discuss BMP by homeowners; monitoring of target sites. Ability Program - Demonstration project to make techniques and tools available to disabled persons (at Arboretum and otherwise). Master Gardner - Assistance to residents in all aspects of gardening. Requires 12 4-hour training sessions for certificate.

North Carolina Division of Coastal Management - State coastal land use agency which performs permitting and enforcement and reviews local coastal plans. Environmental Law and Land Use required.


North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries - Field experience managing fisheries resources.


North Carolina Division of Water Quality - State water quality agency which is responsible for the EPDES permit system, ground water and water quality enforcement. Requires strong field and data management skills. Agency prefers that students have entire days available for field work. Environmental Law required.

North Carolina Labor Commissioner - State agency charged with enforcing workplace safety laws. Opportunities in the Wilmington office and for semester away in Raleigh.

North Carolina Resource Commission - Field work position in Bladen and Duplin counties. Work with region 9 biologist on Wildlife and Resource Management projects of all types. Requires a minimum 30 minute drive.

Orton Plantation - Private historical park near Southport which offers interns opportunities in park management and environmental education.

Sea Grant - North Carolina's coastal resource funding agency. Opportunities in Wilmington and Raleigh to work with staff analyzing proposals and reviewing programs.

Sierra Club - International non-profit environmental organization with a variety of local projects ranging from transportation planning to tree ordinances. Students work on specific projects by agreement with the Sierra Club board.

UNCW Recycling Center - Work with large campus recycling program on research projects to increase recycling on campus. Opportunity for possible research publication.

United States Army Corp of Engineers - US government agency which is responsible for wetlands regulation and all types of water related construction. Opportunities in regulatory, planning and construction.

United States Coast Guard - Marine Safety office in Wilmington offers opportunities to work with hasmat rules and regulations from research to enforcement.

United States Environmental Protection Agency - Numerous opportunities all over the US to work with the major Federal agency in the environmental field. Several national internship programs are offered through EPA itself and many states have regional internship programs.

Wright Corporation - Major chemical corporation with opportunities in environmental management and environmental safety.
