NC Coastal Federation

North Carolina Coastal Federation seeks an intern to assist with all aspects of the federation's work, including coastal issue advocacy, restoration and education. NCCF interns may work on any or all of the following areas of work: 1) Oyster reef bagging, reef restoration, reef monitoring; 2) Marsh planting projects; 3) Stewardship activities at Morris Landing Clean Water Reserve; 4) In-school educational programs related to NCCF's wetlands nursery, rain garden and oyster education programs; 5) Construction/maintenance of stormwater BMPs throughout SE region; 6) Living shoreline projects; 7) Research related to various advocacy issues, including Titan, beach management, water quality issues.

In addition to program work, NCCF interns are asked to assist with various routine tasks, including boat and vehicle maintenance, and office work.

Students' hours are flexible, but students are encouraged to dedicate approximately 12 hours/week during Fall/Spring semesters.

North Carolina Coastal Reserve & Estuarine Research Reservse

NC NERR is interested in one or two practicum students per semester, especially people with boat skills. New practicum students would be general stewardship assistants, dealing with documentation of visitor use, invasive species, marine debris and monitoring species of concern. Folks who have Fridays available for field work preferred.

Audubon North Carolina Practicum Opportunities

NC Division of Water Quality

Has an opening for students (grad or undergrad) interested in the regulatory process. Students must be highly motivated, have 3.0 GPA or better, field methods skills and at least two full days free (for field work). The experience will include permitting and enforcement activities as well as water quality management experience. GIS and familiarity with lab procedures also helpful.

North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC)

The program is offering internships for students interested in pursuing a career in coastal landbird ecology. Depending on the season and past experience, interns can expect a combination of both field work and/or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) management. Field conditions can consist of inclement weather and biting insects. Work may include assisting with mist netting, nest searching, point counts, habitat assessments, and/or site reconnaissance with a GPS unit. GIS management may include data editing and creation, map making, and common spatial analyses. Additional tasks may include equipment maintenance and data entry. Location: NC Coastal Plain but priority areas will be in southeastern NC. Qualifications - None - however, applicants with demonstrated appreciation for the outdoors and avian ecology that are in good physical condition with previous field experience and a basic understanding of ArcGIS software will be considered first. Carolina Ocean Studies

Instructors needed for marine education boating cruises to Masonboro Island as well as both near-shore and offshore reefs. Activities include seining, trawling, claming, rod/reel fishing. Likely observations include bottlenose dolphin, sea turtles. Part time, Spring and Fall. Flexible hours. Prefer science or education degree or teaching experience. Minimum requirement senior or above. Hours per week: 5-30+. Location: Boats are docked at the town marina in Carolina Beach, NC. Green Coast Recycling

A locally owned and operated recycling service that is rapidly growing and very active in our community. We are looking for a intern that we can teach every facet of the recycling business. This internship will be a hands on experience, including processing recyclable materials and participating in commercial and residential recycling collection. Other duties will involve helping with sales, administration, and office work. This includes responding to phone calls and emails, designing literature and newsletters, and helping with other projects and errands. North Carolina Coastal Land Trust

The NCCLT services 32 counties of the NC Coastal Plain and has more than 40,000 acres protected. Each protected property has many responsibilities associate with it; this position will focus mainly on assisting the staff to write Baseline Documentation Reports(BDR's). The BDR contains information that describes conditions of the property at the time of easement recordation. This includes physical property features, as well as property owner information, property descriptions and boundaries, a summary of conservation values, and any other critical items that describe the property to be put under easement. This includes property photos and appropriate map documentation. This position will be mainly office based but there would be opportunities to assist with field work if desired. There is also opportunities to be involved in writing management plans for conservation lands.

Qualifications: The successful applicant will enjoy working in and out of doors; as well as possess strong interpersonal and writing skills. Being in good physical condition is necessary for any outdoor work. In addition, GIS/GPS skills are desired but not required.

The Nature Conservancy

Resource Management: Revisit photo monitoring plots throughout TNC preserves, re-shoot photo pts following monitoring protocol and write up monitoring report GPS Green Swamp inholdings Post TNC Boundaries Map (GPS) invasives species Water Hyacinth on Waccamaw River.

Adminstrative Management: Compile the Camp Pretty Pond Forest Management Plan with the Addendum into one document. Organize and digitally file reports including Burn Plans, Fire Management Plans, Wildfire Response Plans, photo monitoring pts, intern folders, CEreports Digitize/interpret vegetative and endandered species research.

GIS Management: Name topographic map tiles in GIS folders per USGS names other various assignments.

General Information: These are some of the projets that an intern would be doing this Fall. With the adminstrative management they could come in for partial days, but if someone(s) wanted to take on one or several of the larger projects we would need full day commitments hopefully twice a week due to the travel involved. NC Division of Marine Fisheries

Continuous recruitment. Projects such as; 1) analyzesediment samples to determine if a change has occurred in the sediment composition of primary nursery areas; 2) assist with collection of data in the fishery independent assessment program. Both projects are fairly intensive but should be a rewarding experience for the student. Fieldwork is involved.

Cape Fear River Watch, Inc.

Continuous internship opportunities are available in many areas, such as working to assist in providing stormwater outreach and educational programs. The Cape Fear Audubon Society

Looking for an intern with a background in the natural sciences and an interest in education to assist the CFAS education committee in planning and implementing an education outreach program with local K-12 schools. The intern would work directly with the education committee, the teachers and Andy Wood of Audubon NC to modify existing Audubon materials and to develop educational materials with a local emphasis.
