Motion: 2003-Apr-#14
Topic: Recognize the importance of service in promotion and tenure decisions
Proposed by: Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee
Disposition: Adopted 4/03

Whereas, the rapid pace of change in the world has required more faculty effort to support the needs of their universities to remain current in the program offerings, and

Whereas, the increasing demands upon public universities to be accountable to their communities, administrative systems, and state legislatures, has place service loads upon faculty, and

Whereas, formal systems of goal-setting and assessment required by accrediting bodies have increased the work required of faculty to plan and manage academic programs, and

Whereas, it is becoming more difficult on many campuses to find enough faculty to staff important committees, and

Whereas, it is important for all organizations to keep their incentive structures aligned with their missions and goals,

Now therefore, be it resolved that criteria for promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review at the constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina should include requirements that recognize the importance of service in each faculty member's portfolio of accomplishments, and should in certain cases allow significant service to be weighed heavily in a faculty portfolio.
