Individual reports

  1. Chancellor DePaolo
  2. President of the Senate Spaulding

    1.  Ad Hoc Committee on AA reorganization, Andy Jackson, Chair.

Prior to Senate meeting on 3/20 all faculty should have received a message from this committee explaining its purposes and soliciting input on AA reorganization.

    2.  Applied Learning:
The existing structures for curriculum development are not adequate to ensure shared governance in the new circumstances of a  significant curricular initiative from CAS dean.
Short term: Does the Senate wish to have the UCC report with recommendation on whether CAS should adopt applied learning as a college-wide value?
Long term: Should the College and Schools have elected curriculum committees?

    3.  Ken Gurganus for Steering Committee reports on the status of investigation into policies and practices regarding rights/duties of Assoc. Deans/Academic Directors.
The ad hoc committee re motion 07-06-25 plans to meet next on March 28 at 4 P.M. in the CTE conference room.  Committee discussion to date has resulted in a working draft which includes added and deleted material since the last Senate meeting.  The Committee anticipates having a final draft ready well before the April Senate meeting.

    4.  Elections to Autonomous Committees.  Gene Tagliarini is Elections Officer.

5.  Information from University College on “Synergy: UNCW’s Common
Reading Experience”

Fall 2007 Selection Announcement - The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
The Kite Runner, a riveting bestselling novel, tells the memorable story of a complex father son relationship and the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant. The wealthy Amir narrates the story and grapples with issues of class difference, love, loyalty, betrayal, and redemption. All within an eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan.

Program Goals and Overview:
Synergy, the common reading program of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, supports the university mission of integration of teaching, research, and service, stimulation of intellectual curiosity, imagination, critical thinking, and thoughtful expression.  Furthermore, the program supports goal one of the Strategic Plan: Create the most powerful learning experience possible for our students. It is intentionally designed to reinforce the expectations of the university environment through scholarly engagement. Synergy unites the efforts of entities on the campus and in the surrounding community to bring about a combined positive effect greater than that which these elements could achieve working separately.

6.  Information from Division of Student Affairs:
In response to on-going concern from faculty that incoming students need to have a more academic orientation as they enter UNCW, Student Affairs is bringing back a (redesigned) Convocation for fall 2007.  The preliminary program and Convocation will be focused exclusively on academic expectations.  We will be using the original “Statement on Academic Expectations” developed several years ago as a starting point.  Intent is to have a faculty member speak at Convocation.  The deans are supportive of this idea.
