SPRING 2004

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION

TO:                  All UNCW Faculty Members

FROM:             Dr.Carrie Clements and Dr. Elizabeth Ervin, Co-Chairs, UNCW Research Committee

DATE:              January 15, 2004

The Research Committee will be reviewing applications for Undergraduate Research Fellowships available for the 2004-2005 academic year. Fellowship awards consist of a partial tuition waiver in the amount of up to $1000. This competition, intended to stimulate original research among undergraduate students, is open to any rising junior or senior in any department or major who has completed at least one semester at UNCW.

A proposed project may be in any academic area and should be completed by the end of the 2004-2005 academic year. Each student must have a faculty sponsor who serves as an advisor and assists in selecting a project suitable to the student's abilities and the timing of the awards. The project idea may originate with the student or advisor but must be developed to a substantial degree by the student. Course credit may be arranged through a Directed Individual Study or the Honors Program. A 1-page written report summarizing the results of the project must be submitted to the Research Committee Chair on or before the last class day of the Spring 2005 semester.

Acceptance of the award of a tuition waiver may affect other financial aid eligibility.  If the proposed research involves human or animal subjects, approval must be obtained through appropriate ethics review procedures prior to the release of funds.

Each application must include a completed cover page and 15 copies of the proposal. Photocopies of approval documents must be submitted with the proposal. Information packets and application forms will be available online at www.uncw.edu/urc/index.html after February 1.

Candidates must file their application with their respective department chairperson no later than March 29, 2004. Each department chair should review the completed application and sign the information sheet indicating the availability of departmental resources for the project. Candidates should then deliver their completed application package to S&B 110, by 5:00 pm, April 2 and register for an interview with the Faculty Research Committee. Interviews will last approximately 15 minutes and will be held April 27th between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
