Gilles' Wife
Directed by Frédéric Fonteyne. Belgium/France, 2004, 103 min.

Gilles' Wife “An intense, slow-burning tale of simmering jealousy and corrosive sexual obsession. Cinematographer Virginie Saint-Martin’s elegant chiaroscuro compositions perfectly capture the atmosphere of disquiet and painful uncertainty. But the movie belongs to Emmanuelle Devos, who brilliantly conveys Elisa’s lacerating doubt with nary a word.”

Damon Smith, Time Out

Delwende
Directed by S. Pierre Yameogo. Burkina Faso/France/Switzerland, 2005. 69 min.

DelwendeSet in a small village in Burkina Faso, this mother-daughter tale focuses on the injustice of some traditional African practices and women’s struggle for equality.

“Firmly feminist in outlook and culture-changing in its aspirations, Delwende combines aspects of Greek tragedy with a critical eye toward the misuse of tradition… Like Sembene, Yameogo is enamored with strong women, and in his lead actresses he’s found a terrific conduit for
expressing their nobility and force.”

Jay Weissberg, Variety

Clean
Directed by Olivier Assayas. England/France/Italy/Spain/Portugal, 2004. 110 min.

Clean"Clean is a movie about a woman who begins in a state of severe disequilibrium and finds herself… in an opposite state: balance, clarity, relative peace. The fact that it is not solely her triumph makes it no less moving, and it certainly makes it far more honest than almost every other movie you’re likely to see about spiritual regeneration".

When The Sea Rises
Directed by Gilles Porte & Yolande Moreau. Belgium/France, 2004. 90 min.

When the Sea RisesWhen the Sea Rises tells the story of Irène (Moreau), a 45-year-old actress traveling from one small town to another with her one-woman stage show, “Dirty Business.” What develops is a remarkably natural and tender affair between two true eccentrics, their exuberance and playfulness mixing with a mature, mutual longing.

"Approaches the eloquence of Fellini’s Strada. As you study Ms. Moreau’s features, the actress reveals so many layers of emotional complexity that her face becomes a map pf the world careworn, childlike and profoundly beautiful."

Stephen Holden, The New York Times
