- You will need to be accepted at UNCW before your benefits can be determined.
- If you are transferring course credit and/or hours to UNCW, you will also need a copy of your UNCW 'Evaluation of Transfer Credits.' Again, a copy may be obtained from the Admissions Office or the Registrar.
- If this is the first time you have requested veteran educational benefits (or the first time in a long time), you will need a registered, certified copy of your DD Form 214, 'Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.' You may obtain such a copy by taking your DD214 to the appropriate County (or City) Registrar of Deeds. That office will make properly certified copies for you (usually at no charge). Remember: the copy required by the VA must show the type of discharge, e.g., honorable, on the copy. Any DD214 which does not reflect this information will be rejected by the VA.
- If you have previously used your benefits, (this includes dependents qualified under Chapter 35), you will need the following additional documentation:
- The last VA "Award Letter" received
- The VA File number assigned you (in nearly all cases, Chapter 35 excepted, this will be your Social Security Number).
- VA Form 22-1995. (Unless a Chapter 35 recipient, then. VA Form 22-5495 or 22-5495W.)
- Married veterans receiving pre-Vietnam G.I. Bill Benefits (Chapter 34) must additionally provide the following original documents. All documents will be returned to you:
- Marriage certificate (for current marriage only);
- Birth Certificate(s) for each dependent child;
- VA Form 22-686C (Declaration of Marital Status); (Form is available in the FAVSO);
- Documentation concerning prior marriages of veteran or spouse (divorce decrees, death certificates, etc.).
- Chapter 32 recipients (VEAP), should provide a copy of their 'Enlistment Contract'.
- Chapter 1606 recipients (National Guard or Reserve) must produce a DD Form 2384, 'Notice of Basic Eligibility.' (This form can be obtained from your unit.)
- Students who are accepted into the School of Nursing (usually 'Juniors') must furnish a copy of their Nursing School 'Letter of Acceptance' before we can certify for continued benefits.
- All students will be asked to complete a 'Class Schedule'. You will also be asked to read and sign a copy of the 'Rights and Responsibilities' form.
- Once certified, we will mail or electronically transmit the documentation within 5 working days. Our experience indicates that your first check will generally arrive anywhere from 45 to 90 days from the day the certification reaches Atlanta.
