Christopher Dennis specializes in the history, literatures and cultures of Colombia, specifically Afro-Colombian literatures and cultures. In his most recent research, he addresses Afro-Colombian hip-hop as a medium for exploring some of the more salient ways in which globalization and the spread of U.S. pop culture affect ethnic-racial minorities in Latin America. Through an interdisciplinary cultural study, he examines how black, urban youth are reworking ethnicity through rap and its performance. As a Ph.D. candidate, he spent one year in the country conducting research while on a Fulbright grant (2004-2005).
