Dr. Stevens recently received tenure and promotion to associate professor. He teaches courses in Spanish language, Hispanic linguistics, and Spanish civilization. His areas of research are phonetics and phonology, second language acquisition, and sociolinguistics. His publications include articles on the acquisition of Spanish as a second language and Spanish dialectal variation. Professor Stevens is currently researching sociolinguistic aspects of the use of Spanish argot. He is also interested in the use of "Junk Spanish" by speakers of American English to create humorous or pejorative expressions, such as "no problemo", "exactamundo", or "hasta la vista, baby!"
