
Why Major in German?
It's easier than you think!
- German is not more difficult to learn than any other foreign language.
- It is possible to start learning German at UNCW and to major in German. There is also a German minor. You need only 12 classes/36 credits (including GER 201/202) for the major!
You will go places!

The German major is flexible: you can take classes abroad, at UNCW, and together online with students and faculty from ASU, ECU, NCSU, UNCC, UNCG, UNCA, and WCU via the NC German Studies Consortium. Even some courses from other departments can count towards the major.
- You can study in Germany for a semester or a year through the UNC Baden-Württemberg Exchange Program.It's affordable and your financial aid carries!
There is an education abroad program that fits your unique needs: spend a summer, a semester, or a year in Austria, Germany, or Switzerland.
You will think globally!
- Learning German deepens your knowledge of the cultures of Central Europe. You will deepen your knowledge of your own language and culture, too: German and English are closely related and many American customs and traditions have German origins.
- German is the most-spoken language in the European Union.
You will think critically! 

- German contributions to Western art, literature, music, philosphy, religion, and science have been immense. German is the language of Luther, Goethe, Nietzsche, Kant, and Kafka, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Freud and Einstein also spoke German.
You will get a job!
- There are many internships for American students learning German.
- German is the international language of Business, Science, and Tourism, second only to English. Germany is the world's largest exporter and the third largest economy.
