Ashlee Balena completed her Ph.D. at UNC-Chapel Hill in May 2007. Her dissertation topic focused on the theme of loss in the first-person narrative of Spanish author Rosa Montero. In addition to teaching beginning and intermediate classes, this former Seahawk is also the owner and founder of Occupational Language Source, a business that provides instruction for the job-specific language and culture needs of the workplace. She recently has offered personalized Spanish classes for the Wilmington and Leland Police Departments. Balena also plans to play a vital role in the promotion and implementation of UNC-Wilmington study abroad programs.
