The faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is committed to preparing students for participation in a global environment, be it business, teaching, government agencies, or graduate studies. More and more students pursue dual majors or minors in a foreign language and another area because knowing a foreign language is an advantage for future careers. Furthermore, while studying a foreign language helps students learn about other cultures and languages, it also strengthens linguistic and cultural competence in English. Finally, studying a foreign language enhances analytical and interpretive abilities. The department offers a wide spectrum of courses in literature, film studies, linguistics, phonetics, civilization, translation, conversation, and composition. Majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad in order to immerse themselves completely in the culture.
