Course Descriptions

GLS 523:  Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Popular Culture

Instructor:  Donna King

The first half of this course will focus on the enormous influence corporations have on American popular culture.  The commercialization of culture is so vast and complete that it is often taken for granted as natural or just the way things are.  We will critically examine this process of the corporatization of culture and discuss its social, ethical, and political implications. In the second half of the course we will apply the same critical perspective to representations of race, class, gender, and sexuality in popular culture.  Students taking this course must be highly self-motivated and competent working in an online format.  Participants are expected to write informed and thoughtful essays each week based on  assigned readings and videos and are required to post weekly commentaries and responses in an online discussion forum.
