Course Description

GLS 592:  Jungian Psychology

Instructor:  Jenny Yates

The course will provide a study of basic ideas in Jungian depth psychology.  More specifically, assigned readings will focus on the following topics: the stages of life; the structure of the psyche; instinct and the unconscious; the concept of the collective unconscious; the relations between the ego and the unconscious; phenomenology of the self; marriage as a psychological relationship; psychological types; the transcendent function; analytical psychology and poetry; dream symbolism; spiritual problems; East/West differences; synchronicity; and Jung's answer to Job.

Fall 2008-specific instructions:  Read the material specified in the schedule (provided during first class) and bring at least one written issue/questions for class discussion.  Term paper (10 pages) due December 2, 2008 on some aspect of Jungian psychology.  Oral report on research beginning mid-term.
