GLS 567: Slums, Manors, and the American Dream

A discussion of the effects of rapid urbanization, greed, and the rationalization of immense wealth upon American writers from about 1890 to 1925. The course examines fiction, plays, muckraking journalism, and documentary film to understand how writers employ sensation, sentiment, melodrama, and realism to elicit responses from their readers.
