The UNC Academic Common Market makes it possible for residents from other SREB states to be eligible for reduced tuition rates if the student is unconditionally accepted into a participating graduate program.
- If the public institutions in your home state do not offer degree programs in your desired field of study and it is among the degree programs offered by the University of North Carolina Academic Common Market, it may be possible to arrange North Carolina in-state status for you to pursue the degree program. Out-of-state residents who participate in the UNC Academic Common Market pay in-state tuition and fees and are treated for all purposes of the University of North Carolina as residents of North Carolina while enrolled in the program.
- You must first determine whether the degree program that you are seeking at a University of North Carolina campus is among those approved for participation in the Academic Common Market. The UNC-ACM inventory can be searched to peruse available UNC degree programs.
- If your chosen graduate program of study is not available on the current UNC-ACM inventory, you may submit a petition to add a program to the agreement between North Carolina and your home state. For further information on requesting a UNC program to be available to residents of your state, please contact your home state ACM State Coordinator for details and procedures.
- Once accepted unconditionally into a participating graduate degree program of the University of North Carolina, an application for participation in the ACM must be submitted to your home state ACM State Coordinator. A listing of ACM State Coordinators is available.
- Once you have completed the ACM application materials and residency verification documents, your home state ACM Coordinator will communicate to the UNC-ACM Campus Coordinator and the UNC-ACM State Coordinator your eligibility to participate in the program. The UNC-ACM Campus Coordinator determines whether you meet all eligibility and institutional requirements for granting in-state status. The UNC-ACM Campus Coordinator also determines, according to his or her institution's deadline for tuition payment, whether to approve your certification for the current term or for the following term. If approved, the UNC-ACM State Coordinator will send you an e-mail notification, with copies to your home state ACM State Coordinator and the UNC-ACM Campus Coordinator. Contact information is available for the ACM State Coordinators and the UNC-ACM Campus Coordinators.
- In North Carolina, there is no need to reapply for ACM participation once you have received approval from the UNC-ACM State Coordinator, as long as you are:
- continuously enrolled in the institution,
- you do not change majors, and
- you maintain your home state residency.
North Carolina guidelines also require students to maintain full-time status in residence at the university. This means, for example, that if you enroll in a program that is offered by way of distance education and you subsequently switch from taking it in residence to taking it via distance education, your ACM status will be terminated. Not meeting the guidelines above will jeopardize your eligibility for continuance in the ACM program and receiving tuition reduction assistance. It is your responsibility to communicate directly with the UNC-ACM Campus Coordinator at the campus you will be attending for specific details about eligibility requirements for participation in the ACM. If your eligibility to participate in the ACM changes, you will need to be recertified by your home state ACM State Coordinator should you wish to reapply for ACM participation.
